Windows Installer Repair

Sometimes you may come across a pop-up that claims you need to engage in a ‘windows installer repair.’  Although at first glance this may seem like a good idea, it is actually probably a virus that is seeking to invade your computer once you grant it permission.  The worst part about spyware that offer you ‘windows installer repair’ is that often they tell you that it is needed and charge you a fee.  Ironically, most often you are not paying for windows installer repair, but are actually paying for a virus that will ruin your computer if you do not immediately remove it.

The most obvious reason that innocent users fall for this, is because they see the word windows that begins the ‘windows installer repair’ claim and think they need to fix something this importantly right away.  However, the truth of the matter is that if you bought your computer new, you already have installed windows on your computer.  Even if you have upgraded, you only need to reinstall windows once unless you reformat your computer.

So logic dictates that if windows are running on your computer while you are surfing the net, there is no reason why you would need a service that is claiming to offer ‘windows installer repair.’  If it is not currently broken, which it is not if you are using Internet Explorer, why would you need windows installer repair?

However, the spyware creators who charge for the ‘windows installer repair’ service are betting on the fact that there are many naïve computer users out there, which unfortunately there are.  Even seasoned computer users can get tricked into downloading this software because they do not realize that even clicking the ‘x’ on the ‘windows installer repair’ window can automatically start the download of a virus.

The best way to avoid infection from this malicious spyware is thus to ignore the window promising ‘windows installer repair’ all together and use task manager to close the window.  Once you have accomplished this, you need to run a complete on demand virus scan of your computer because likely the ‘windows installer repair’ spyware rode in with a Trojan virus through  a hole in your Internet security and is lurking waiting for another chance to cause distraction or trick you at a later date.  Thus, you want to execute extreme caution and make sure you completely clear your computer of the Trojan before you use y computer anymore.
